Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga and Rangatiratanga are values embedded within our kura. We work hard every day to ensure our tamariki understand and practise these values. Here are some examples of our tamariki demonstrating those values…
Kia ora whānau!
Just a few quick reminders to help us keep everyone healthy, organized, and ready to learn:
Label, Label, Label! Please double-check that every piece of uniform (especially polor fleeces and hats) is clearly named so lost items can find their way back home.
The 48-Hour Rule: If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they must remain at home until they are 48 hours clear from the last episode. This is crucial to stop bugs spreading to classmates and staff.
Fuel for Learning: Please remember to pack a filled water bottle and some healthy "brain food" (fruit or vegetables) every day. Hydration and good nutrition help keep those little minds sharp!
Thanks for your support in keeping our school safe and happy.

Our children have had a busy but exciting term! We have had swimming sports at Clive pools followed by Interschool championship races at Raureka School where our tamariki did really well.
The kids have also had opportunities to participate in a Ki-o-rahi competition, Girls soccer camp, Mitre 10 Tough kids and The Gala which involves netball and rippa rugby.
Our school and house leaders have also been involved in trips to the Houngarea Marae and to Te Mata o Rongokako.
Within HTN classes we have been revisiting the importance of our Year 5 and 6 students showing the school values. Part of this process has been each class building strong tuakana teina relationships with younger buddy classes.
In HTN we had super Whānau engagement at the Whānau Aspirations, and it was wonderful to set goals for the tamariki with their families. Our start to Ngā Ara Mātauranga (Place Based Education) with the topic ‘Takitimu’ has been supported by Ātea a Rangi Educational Trust. A graphic novel was purchased by the school for senior classrooms and supports the children learning about how Takitimu got its name. The tamariki have really enjoyed reading and learning about this topic through a comic/graphic novel. The Kaiako (teachers) of HTN have been really impressed with how our students have settled quickly into their learning in Term 1, and we are all keen to see our student’s goals achieved in Term 2! We wish everyone a wonderful Easter break!
Last Tuesday, a wonderful group of Year 5&6 Pasifika Leaders attended the Hastings Primary School Pasifika Leaders Day hosted by Mahora School.
It was an awesome opportunity to develop connections with other Pasifika students from across Hawke's Bay. There was also an inspiring guest speaker - Denise Aiolupotea! Denise shared her sporting journey and encouraged everyone to be proud of who they are and to believe in their own abilities.
This event is a real highlight on the sporting calendar and it was another wonderful day. We had 150 year 3-6 students take on the fun and challenging course. The tamariki go around the course in groups of 10 and it is not a race, but an opportunity for tamariki to complete the course in their own time. There are inflatable obstacles, climbing frames, monkey bars, a water slide and much more. We are so proud of the tamariki that gave this a go and challenged themselves!
During Weeks 7 and 8, Heretaunga Haaro o te Kaahu tamariki took part in an exciting Safe Scootering programme led by Sport Hawke’s Bay. Throughout the programme, students developed essential scootering skills while learning important footpath and road safety practices. After building confidence at school, they put their skills to the test on a scoot to William Nelson Skatepark. It was fantastic to see the tamariki showing enthusiasm, perseverance, and resilience—especially during some very hot days! Unfortunately for Te Rangi it rained, so they were unable to scooter to the skate park. However, they did manage to scoot to Cornwall park and had fun on the playground! A big thank you to the amazing team from Sport Hawke’s Bay for delivering such a fun and valuable learning experience for our tamariki.
Some of our tamariki have the opportunity to work with specialised kaimahi who have mātauranga in a range of different kaupapa. Our Manaaki Tamariki kaupapa has been within our kura for 4 years and was established to provide an alternative option to learning outside of the classroom, covering a wide range of curriculum areas whilst focussing on kaupapa Māori.
Our School Attendance Management Plan has been in action since the start of 2026. The Government’s priority is to ensure that 80% of tamariki are attending school 90% of the time by 2030. Thank you to the whānau who have worked hard to ensure their tamariki have been at school regularly this term. Regular attendance means that your child has had LESS than 5 days of absence this term, which has been 68% of our school for Term 1. This is a slight improvement from Term 1 2025, but we know we can do better.
We are here to support you and your child to ensure they attend school every day. If you have any concerns please contact the school office.
We have been using HERO for two terms now and many more whānau have joined on to the platform. This is how we share notices with whānau, whānau can share student absence with us, you can view your child’s attendance and so much more. We have noticed that some whānau haven’t joined yet and they will be missing out on notices for their child.
Please contact the school office or your child’s teacher to join up and be connected with the app. We are planning a whānau evening to unpack the new reporting requirements and how you will receive that. This will be during term 2 and more information will come next term with a date and time.
Our school leaders have been actively involved in our kura this term. We have had two great leadership learning days so far which has seen our rangatira engage in group tasks, team building activities whilst going deeper into leadership qualities - developing our understanding of Rangatiratanga. Term 2 will bring another term of great leadership development and growth - Tū Ake Nei!
REMINDER - All absentees must be reported via HERO or our absentee voicemail (878-8757 press 1). Email and the old cell phone number are no longer monitored.
