Last week our Heretaunga takoto noa kapa haka had a noho marae at Houngarea. This was the first noho marae for the tamariki at Frimley School. There was lots of laughing, smiling, eating and singing happening together. Our aim was to learn and practise new waiata and moteatea connecting to Kahungunu that will be part of our bracket.
It was a challenge for some tamariki being away from home for a night, but the mahi was fun and exciting and with the manaakitanga being exercised by everyone, we were able to work through those challenges for all. The energy was high, the learning was huge and the whanaungatanga was exceptional.
A big mihi to all kaiako and kaiawhina involved to make this noho a success. A special mihi to Matua Chase and Matua Jason for their commitment and love for Kapa Haka. Ngā mihi nui ki a kōrua!
Kia ora whānau!
Just a few quick reminders to help us keep everyone healthy, organized, and ready to learn:
Label, Label, Label! Please double-check that every piece of uniform (especially polor fleeces and hats) is clearly named so lost items can find their way back home.
The 48-Hour Rule: If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they must remain at home until they are 48 hours clear from the last episode. This is crucial to stop bugs spreading to classmates and staff.
Fuel for Learning: Please remember to pack a filled water bottle and some healthy "brain food" (fruit or vegetables) every day. Hydration and good nutrition help keep those little minds sharp!
Thanks for your support in keeping our school safe and happy.

In Heretaunga Ararau our tamariki have been engaged in rich learning experiences through play, exploration, and hands-on learning across the kura.
In Ararau, children are encouraged to follow their own interests, become self-directed learners, and choose between indoor and outdoor play experiences supported by kaiako. Alongside developing large motor skills and creativity outdoors, tamariki have been exploring early maths concepts such as colours, patterns, counting, and number knowledge through singing, dancing, games, and hands-on resources like Numicon.
Favourite learning characters such as Subtraction Shark and Adding Alligator have made maths learning fun and engaging. Tamariki have been learning about the Takitimu waka and the important role of the taniwha Ruamano in guiding the waka safely home, while also enjoying imaginative play through activities like playing teachers and performing puppet shows.
Our learning about the Takitimu waka has been woven into maths, movement, and literacy experiences, with tamariki practising foundation movement skills, working together in teams, and beginning early handwriting through shared storytelling and sentence creation.
On Friday 29th May all staff will be working offsite at Houngarea Marae, involved in Professional Development. School will be CLOSED Friday as well as the following Monday for the King’s Birthday. Thank you for your support and enjoy the long weekend.
Last week we were very fortunate to have the Karamu High School Head Girl Tamblyn Hutchings (ex Frimley Student) and Hastings Boys’ High School Head Boy Amanjot Singh speak with our School Leaders.
Our school leaders were incredibly lucky to have this opportunity as part of their leadership development in our kura. They have regular sessions to help them understand and build their own leadership. Tamblyn and Amanjot shared their leadership journey, answered the many questions from our leaders and were generous in their time and advice. This was on the back of Amanjots’ recent speech success as the 2026 National Champion at the Race Unity Speech Awards. If you haven't listened to this…it's a MUST DO!
He mihi nui tēnei ki a kōrua Tamblyn rāua ko Amanjot. It gives you huge confidence in the future of Heretaunga and our country knowing there are young people like this leading in our community ~ Tū Ake Nei!
This year there have been some changes to the types of assessment we are using with our tamariki. There are new assessment expectations across the country, and some of these have come into effect in 2026.
Our New Entrant, Year 1, and some Year 2 students have completed 20-week and 40-week phonics assessments. Our Year 3–6 children have also completed the SMART tool assessment, which covers reading, writing, and mathematics.
There are also new reporting expectations, and we have made some changes in this area at Frimley School. We are currently working through these changes with our staff to ensure they are well prepared for the mid-year reports. We have planned whānau information hui on Thursday 11 June. There will be two sessions available to attend: either 3:00pm or 6:30pm. We want to give everyone the opportunity to come along and learn more about these changes — what they mean for your child, what they mean for you and your whānau, what the new report will look like, and how to understand the new language being used.
Please come along to the information sessions so we can share this information with you.
School photos are being taken on Friday 12th June. Please ensure that your child is wearing the CORRECT school uniform and it is clean and tidy. Long hair also needs to be tied up. Ngā mihi
