Room 16

Hooray! You have arrived at Room 16 Frimley School.
We are a class of 31, year 4 and 5 students.

Our over-arching catch cry for the year is
“GIVE IT A GO!”
Making mistakes is not bad, failure to complete is not a disaster, but failing to begin and give it a go is not acceptable in our class.

Term 3

This term has been another busy one with a wonderful variety of themes and activities. It was also very exciting as we were given our own particular country for the world cup.
Seth has written about this:
For the Rugby World Cup, Room 16 was supporting Italy and there were other classes competing against us. We have been doing research on Italy so that we know something about our team. We have been looking at their Culture, their Art, Ancient Buildings, Food, Sports, and other things as well. It has been fun having to say some Italian  words in the morning to our teacher, like ‘Buon giorno’ hello and ‘Come sta’ How are you? We did some amazing Italian Art. Our black and white tesserae tiles took us a long time to do, but they looked really good on the floor in the hall.  Do you know what I am saying? Molto lieto. (  It was nice meeting you.)

We also held a World cup Rippa Rugby day, and we came second, runners up. We were beaten by only half a point. So we performed better than Italy in the World cup.  In this photo you can see us dressed and ready to go for the day

Another Theme we have been studying this term has been about The Early migration of both the Maoris and the Europeans to New Zealand.  Click the link at the top of the page to read more.

Term 2

What an amazing term we have had. We have had such a varied and interesting programme it is hard to choose any topic as our major.
Our visit to the Arataki Honey Farm was a wonderful experience for the children. The follow up activities and writing was of a very high standard. Look under Written Language to see two stories by Cameron and Brandon. These are an example of the work that was completed.

For technology, under the guidance of Mrs Fritchley, the children had to design a model bee, and show how they would attach the wings, legs, antennae etc. They then had to comment on the modifications required, if their original prototype wasn’t successful.

Callum shares his unfolding story.

Also during the term we participated in the D.A.R.E. programme run in schools by the local Youth Police Officer.  The work that the children produced was outstanding. Their “My Unfolding Stories,” were awesome, and I had to get The Principal and Deputy Principal to assess and try and choose 5 that stood out above the rest. This was almost impossible to do. The children are to be congratulated on the time and effort it took to produce such high calibre folders.

TERM ONE

Already we have had an exciting beginning to our year where the students have had to step outside their comfort zones and participate in a variety of experiences. We have visited Waimarama Beach and had expert tuition from the Lifeguards on how to keep ourselves safe around water, and have completed written and practical activities to help us remember the basic rules.

The year 4 students have participated in a School Camp Day where we learnt how to put up tents, participate in simple orienteering, do environmental drawings and rubbings, Robot navigation, and fun activities involving a parachute - a really fun-filled day.

The year five students have had a full week camp at Kaitawa. Every day was filled with activities such as kayaking, caving, glow worm spotting, tramping, climbing the Panekiri Bluff, confidence course, and of course the evening games, and concerts and ‘In the Bag’ excitement.

Culturally the children have ‘Given it a Go’ and listened to the magic of the Beijing Musicians.  As a Senior School we visited the Hastings Opera house (with its resident ghost) and were entertained and wowed by 8 and 9 year old Chinese children playing keyboards,  zithers. grand pianos, dancing and singing. (see the children’s comments under a Written language link.) These same children  performed at the opening of the Olympic games held in China.

Our theme for the second half of this term is sadly very appropriate. ”How to Survive through a Disaster.” This was chosen to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake. Little did we realise that there would be such a vivid demonstration of the practical realities of surviving a disaster as the February Christchurch Earthquake has so starkly portrayed.
