Food For Thought

Since the start of Term 3 we have been working on making healthy food choices. In week 2, Marie from Food for Thought came to talk to us about the food pyramid and nutrition, reading food labels, and then took us on a trip to Pak n Save where we had to read the food labels and decide what were the better options.

Marie showed us the different sections of the Food Pyramid - Eat Most, Eat Sometimes, and Eat Least.  We now know that we need to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and a good selection of rice, pasta, breads, grains, and cereals.  We know the we should eat some meat, and other body building products, as well as having some dairy products each day.  We have to limit ourselves to treats and junkfood.

When Marie showed us how to read food labels she asked us to rank all these different types of drink as to what is good for us.  We were so surprised to see how much sugar was in coke, fruit choice, powerade, E2, and even flavoured milk.  When reading food labels we need to look at the per 100g column so that we can get a good understanding of how healthy/unhealthy the food is.

On our trip to Pak n Save we went on a scavenger hunt round the supermarket to find food and look at the labels.  We had to read food labels from all areas of the food pyramid and decide just how healthy they are by reading the food label.  At the end we had some questions to answer about our trip to the supermarket.

Now that we are able to make healthy food choices we have planned a menu for our shared lunch.  For our scrummy lunch we indulged in wraps with chicken, lettuce, tomato, capsicum, cucumber, lite mayonnaise, and cheese.  These were accompanied with corn chips and salsa, and freshly made fried rice filled with assorted vegetables.  To sweeten things up we had pikelets with jam, low fat cup cakes, fruit kebabs (kiwifruit, pineapple, banana) drizzled with yoghurt.  We washed it down with a fresh fruit smoothie (milk, berries, banana, and a little bit of ice cream).

Enjoy the photos of our trip to Pak n'Save with Marie, as well as our shared lunch.
